Digital growth expands access to FDs premium audience

Growth across all platforms – that’s the headline for FD’s digital transformation this past year. Below are the key performance highlights.

Digital growth expands access to FDs premium audience

Strong growth across app, web and podcasts

FD app user engagement surged throughout 2024, consistently outperforming year-over-year metrics. Peak performance was recorded in May, October, and November. Meanwhile, FD.nl maintained robust user numbers, with November emerging as the standout month for web traffic.

2024's top-performing content

The FD editorial team delivered an exceptionally productive year, publishing an average of 60 articles daily. The highest-performing story of 2024 was FD’s exclusive interview with Sywert van Lienden. Ahead of the civil court proceedings in Amsterdam in April, FD journalists Bart Mos and Boudewijn Geels spoke with one of the founders of Hulptroepen Alliantie. The story uncovered how tens of millions were made from face mask trading in 2020, while the operation was publicly presented as non-profit.

Other top-performing stories that drove significant reader engagement covered key themes including:

  • Power grid overload crisis
  • Impact of new Box 3 tax regulations on holiday homes
  • Generation Z insights
  • Unsold Chinese EVs in Dutch ports
  • Mortgage interest deduction developments

From Plasterk to Oerlemans, Kaag to Trump

Exclusive interviews with Ronald Plasterk and Daphne Schippers also drove exceptional reader engagement. The diversity of FD’s most popular sections reflects our broad editorial scope. While the ‘Beursblog‘ section’s success aligns with FD’s position as the leading authority in investment and market news, the strong performance of ‘Diner met het FD‘ offers an interesting insight. This weekly feature presents in-depth conversations with leaders across business, politics, and culture. In 2024, we shared meals and insights with Nina Storms, Reinout Oerlemans, Sigrid Kaag, Victor Knaap, and Robert Eenhoorn.

A recent innovation in FD’s digital ecosystem is our special features section. These deep dives combine compelling storytelling with sophisticated data visualization to explore critical contemporary issues. Standout specials from 2024 investigated topics including letterbox companies, the anti-deposit lobby, a decade of inclusive education, and – inevitably – Donald Trump. Newsletters and pddcasts see substantial growth

FD’s newsletters and podcasts delivered exceptional performance in 2024, with newsletter subscriptions climbing by nearly 7%. While established products like the FD Morning Newsletter continue to excel, we’ve expanded our specialized portfolio to include targeted content across labor market, energy, and tech sectors. The podcast segment showed particularly strong metrics. Our daily show FD Dagkoers has firmly established itself among the Netherlands’ top-performing podcasts, ranking #21 in the NMO Podcast Standard November 2024 with nearly 40,000 weekly users. Additionally, FD’s podcast series ‘Achter Gesloten Deuren‘ launched a successful new season. ‘De fiscalist van de sterren‘ investigates the U.S. Justice Department’s pursuit of Dutch tax consultant Frank Butselaar.
