Our lessons learned

Fortunately, there were many advertisers these past few weeks who realise that they must stay in touch with their customers and audience through hard times as well as good times. We learned some important lessons from a number of recent campaigns. We know which approaches work right now and which ones do not. We are happy to share this knowledge with you:

What does work now

• Sentiment trumps sales;
• staying loyal to your brand identity and customer base;
• entrepreneurs will remember your behaviour in hard times, so offer help, provide reliable information, be relevant to your customer base;
• design remains important: include a good trigger regardless of the medium;
• the online reach of news media (especially FD.nl and BNR.nl!) has grown exponentially, so be sure to include these channels to generate additional reach.

What doesn't work now

• Going for hard and fast turnover;
• communicating huge promotions;
• not changing your message and acting as if nothing is happening;
• not staying in touch: do not forget the entrepreneurs lest they forget you.

Increased consumption of news media

Rapid developments are generating a growing need for reliable news. This is not just true for consumers but for entrepreneurs, (private) investors, and professionals who require reliable news based on reality as well. As a result, the FD and BNR are experiencing significant growth:

• Daily newspapers are read more frequently and for a longer time. The FD now has over 100,000 subscribers!;
• the time that the Dutch spend listening to (online) radio channels in the coronavirus crisis continues to rise. BNR is the Netherlands’ leading home-working channel and experienced a 82% growth in the number of online listeners;
• as many of 54% of all Dutch consume news media more frequently today. The number of unique visits and views at FD.nl and BNR.nl has risen significantly as a result. FD.nl reached over 2.5 million unique visitors in April, for instance, and more than 1 million unique visitors accessed BNR.nl in that month.
